An Old Goldblatt's Store Goes Green (and Gold)
Three mayors ago, in the City that Works, the original Goldblatt Bros. Department Store sat empty on Chicago Avenue in the City’s bustling West Town neighborhood. A shadow of its former distinguished self, the structure was slated for demolition, to be replaced by a Del Ray Farms supermarket. Enter a group of community activists and preservationists, whose objections to the razing prompted the City to buy the vacant store in 1997 and recast it as a municipal office building. The structure, now a Chicago landmark, underwent an extensive rehab to accommodate a senior center, the Chicago Department of Family Services and other City agencies. More recently, part of it was remodeled again to become the West Town branch of the Chicago Public Library.

At 14 years old, Tiara began her work in environmental justice at the Eco-Ambassador Program. Upon learning about food and sustainable land use, Tiara thought about the food desert in her own community of Calumet City, Illinois, where thriving businesses are constantly replaced with liquor stores. Pete’s, Aldi, and Food4Less are currently the only major fresh food marts on the far edges of Calumet City.

John Landecker is a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was disc jockey or host for radio programs in Toronto, Cleveland, and Chicago for over 30 years. After retiring in 2015, he returned to radio in 2020, joining WGN (AM) as the 7-10 p.m. weeknights evening host. He is considered a radio legend.
